The Dishwasher Problem
The narrower part of this slider (back/right) is supposed to attach to another very similar piece of metal in order to extend it. The attachment is via 3 spot-welds, and the welds all failed yesterday.
The weld-points are the slightly brownish spots.
Here's the other side, just for context (and part number):
That slider (the broken one) belongs on the left; here's the right-hand one, still attached properly:
...and here's the best solution I've been able to come up with for re-attaching the broken one: literally a paper-clip.
Unfortunately, I was only able to get that in place and bent properly because I have access to both sides of the assembled rail-pair where it slides outside of the dishwasher enclosure. The other end doesn't allow that, since it stays inside regardless of slide position.
Apparently the only way to remove the whole assembly requires pulling the dishwasher out of the cabinet, to access screws on the outside.
Some of the replacement parts available on Ebay talk about being reinforced/redesigned, and how durable they are. It's hard to tell from the photos, but this sounds like they realized that spot-welding was a bad idea and came out with a new version where the two smaller pieces are now one longer piece (possibly a bit thicker) -- which is probably what I'd want to get.
