2006-05-05 pickup details
This is rather simpler than we had originally thought, as Zander will not need to be picked up from CFS; the other two locations are fairly close.
Benjamin
Benjamin needs to be picked up from Central Park School for Children between 3:05 pm and 3:35 (after 3:35, they impose a stiff late penalty).
Directions to CPSC from our house
Yahoo directions for reference, though they take you a different way (through the downtown construction, which we avoid)
Pickup from CPSC is easiest if you have the sign which says "Scott / Benjamin" on it; otherwise you may have to tell someone who you're picking up ("Benjamin, in Scott's class"). I've made a note to put the sign in the Nissan before we leave.
From our house: turn right from the driveway and go down to 751/Academy Road at the bottom of the hill. Turn right. About 1/2 mile later you get to the light at Duke University Road; bear right (before the light) onto Duke University Road. Go straight for a couple of miles (through several traffic lights and across the Durham Freeway (147)) until you get to the light at Duke Street (one-way street right at the top of the hill just past the police station on the right and just before you get to downtown Durham). Turn left on Duke Street. Turn right on W. Corporation Street (2nd small street in between the former tobacco warehouses now converted to offices). Cross the abandoned railroad tracks, Liggett Street, pass the old Durham Bulls park on the left, and turn left on Foster Street (you'll see the Scrap Exchange nearby, across Foster St.) Go down the hill, through the traffic light, and CPSC is on the right (large brick building at 724 Foster Street) -- there should be cars lining up. You get in line and eventually Benjamin will come out. There's usually a teacher to help with opening and closing doors.
From there, you go to pick up Josh at Lyon Park...
Directions to Lyon Park from CPSC
Yahoo directions for reference, but not the way we usually go
Josh can be picked up from Lyon Park anytime before 6pm. He seems to enjoy the time he spends there (at home he tends to be bored much of the time), so no need to hurry -- you could even take the other 2 to a park for a bit after picking up Benjy, and still have plenty of time to get to Josh.
After pulling away from the curb at CPSC, continue up to the traffic light at the top of the hill and turn left onto Trinity Ave. Go straight through the traffic light at Washington St., under the abandoned railroad trestle, through the light at N. Duke St., and then turn left at the light on Gregson Street.
Go straight on Gregson for a couple of miles; it crosses back over Chapel Hill St., and over the Durham Freeway (147) (changes its name to Vickers Ave.). The next light is Morehead; turn right there (it may look like a one-way, but it isn't). Go down Morehead, then up. The next left past Fairview (and the last left before the light at the top of the hill) is the one you want – Cornell. Turn left there. Take the first right (Halley) and park anywhere (in the lot above/right if there's no space on the street).
Directions back home from Lyon Park
I usually go back down the street because buses tend to block the top end of the street, but it really doesn't matter which way you go; either way, you want to continue heading the same direction, i.e. south, until you get to W. Lakewood Ave. (In case this is confusing: let's say you parked in the lot. If you turn left coming out of the lot and head down Halley, then turn right on Cornell. If you turned right out of the lot and went up the street, turn left on Kent St.) When you get to Morehead, turn right and go all the way up to the traffic light at Lakewood Shopping Center. Turn left onto Chapel Hill Road. Go around various turns, past the firestation, through one traffic light (Anderson St.), and turn right on Pinecrest (it's the 2nd right past Anderson).
B & Z can probably help you find the right directions and turns if you're not sure you'll see them.
