Nick Notes
This was in response to Lynne & Bubba's suggestion that they would like to buy the Benz instead of renting it. To the best of my recollection, the reasoning went something like this: "Nick, if we're going to be paying you all this money to rent the car, we'd much rather be paying that towards owning it." I knew that didn't seem quite right, so I said I would get back to them about it; this email was me getting back to them about it.
"...the difference between a duck..." is a reference to the surrealist joke "Q: What's the difference between a duck? A: One of its sides is both the same!".

Advice from several quarters informs me that the difference between a duck... no, I mean the difference between a purchase and a rental is a lump-sum payment of some sort.
Therefore, in order to consider selling the Benz, I would need the following:
- payment in full of all past-due rental fees (to be calculated [1])
- repair of existing cosmetic damage [2]
- agreement on a sale price (to be negotiated [3])
- receipt of a lump sum (to be negotiated)
[1] My recollection is that I haven't received anything since January at the latest, but I will be going through the bank deposits with a fine-tooth comb looking for any additional payments for this or anything else; whatever I find will be taken into consideration. Please feel free to send me a list of any payments you believe you made, and I'll be sure to look for them specifically.
Also: I need to set a start date for the rental agreement. I have an email from November 10, 2001, saying that I thought it had been about 2 weeks since it officially started. I don't see a reply on that issue, so I'm going to assume November 1, 2001, as the start date until I hear otherwise. (Terms: $100/week, with the first $100 being due Nov. 8 and so forth.)
[2] Repair of earlier brake problem would be taken into consideration (cost of replacing brake shoes only, i.e. cost of repair if it had been attended to before the drums were damaged). Repair of existing transmission problem would be taken into consideration if I'm happy with the state of the transmission afterwards. If repairs are not complete, sale price would be based on the condition of the transmission when first rented.
[3] I spoke with my dad about a sale price and he had no idea, so I will have to research it. I still think you would be better off buying a different vehicle, as the lump-sum I would want would probably get you a pretty nice vehicle free & clear, and/or professional-quality repairs to the Eagle.
Thanks,
N.
