IM is an acronym which stands for instant messaging, a form of electronic communication using short text messages sent electronically (typically over the internet, between computer workstations).
The most common IM service is probably AIM (AOL Instant Messenger); other popular services include ICQ, Yahoo! IM, and GoogleTalk.
