It acquired this name when the existing undeveloped land (partly swamp) was cleared and [[South Square Mall]] built circa [[:Category:1975|1975]]. The mall was demolished in 2004 (possibly starting as early as 2003) and became a regular outdoor-style shopping center, beginning with a Sam's Club and [[Super Target, Durham, NC|Super Target]]. Other parcels surrounding the lot were developed later.
