South Square is the name of a shopping area in Durham, NC. It acquired this name when the existing undeveloped land (partly swamp) was cleared and South Square Mall built circa 1975. The mall was demolished in 2004 (possibly starting as early as 2003) and became a regular outdoor-style shopping center, beginning with a Sam's Club and Super Target. Other parcels surrounding the lot were developed later.
