'''2008-04-03 17:48''' I just now upgraded to MediaWiki v1.12 to fix a problem with pages where the name includes an ampersand. <s>I haven't yet restored short URLs, as the method which worked for v1.11 seems to be broken (again) for 1.12.</s> Apparently it's back to being simple again, yay! -->
1. I'm guessing that when a range of sizes is given like 16-18, it means the
drum is available in 16, 17, and 18 -- i.e. one-inch increments.

2. However, when a range of prices is given for a range of sizes, the
correlation is not as clear, e.g. "Ghana Professional Djembe" is available in
1-inch increments from 10 to 14 inches, but the prices are also listed as $150 -
$350. So what is the price for each size? Should I assume 10=$150, 14=$350, and
pro-rate the others? That would be a $50 increment per inch, i.e. 11=$200,
12=$250, 13=$300 -- which seems sensible. Should I apply that rule for all cases?

3. Same for the "Ghana Djun Djun", which is available in Kenkeni, Sangban, and
Dundumba for $150-$350. What price each option? Should I assume $150=Kenkeni,
$350=Dundumba, and split the difference ($250) for Sangban?

Thx.,
Item #3 on the spreadsheet is "Mali Kangaba Djun Djun Dundumba". The closest
==Lyrics==
<pre>
A thousand tiny airplanes wander through your mother's garden
As she paints a golden picture of the way it used to be
I listen as you whistle all of Mozart's major pieces
And you're breaking all my records but it doesn't bother me
So you've taken all your medals and you're using them as doorstops
And you've sold your family diamonds to the madman down the street

Well listen here my darling -- you've got to take it slowly
They will put you in a fishtank very philosophically
Alas I spoke too quickly, I'll rephrase that faulty stanza
While you're busy hunting shadows in your castle by the sea
So now I'm standing in the alley and you're drawing little circles
And you always pay attention to everyone but me
</pre>
==Notes==
There's a recorded version of this that I'm not 100% happy with on the [[MoG]] page. Some of the lines could use a bit of rework*, but overall it says what I want it to.

(*everyone sees "family diamonds" and thinks it's a reference to gonads or something, which it isn't; also "madman down the street" doesn't quite fit. "pawnshop down the street"? I wanted to convey the idea of carelessly abandoning something very precious that you've been given. A bit like this BF5 lyric from "Where's Summer B?": "I tried to tell you, tried to tell you, took a little bit too long / And now your phone is disconnected and your shit's out on the lawn.")

I haven't heard anything from you about when the storage fee is due, so I went ahead and deposited it in the RDA account today ($150). I see from my records that the last deposit was June 30, and today being July 30 that would seem to be in order.

I also haven't heard anything about how you want to handle moving the Benz... I will tentatively be in Athens on Aug. 8 to do some work for Carrier, and that will probably be a good time for me to deal with it. If that is not a good time for you, please let me know when would be better.

I will need to get the key from you when I move it, or before if possible.

Thanks,

Nick
==Nick Notes==
Ok, yeah, she had mentioned earlier about the person at Neff getting more strict and wanting the payment the week before; this was an unintentional lapse on my part. If Lynne had said something concrete like "it is due on the 25th", I would have remembered. Given all the stuff I've had to repeat over and over to her, though, I don't feel too bad.
It looks like you have a ringmaster number, 706.227.0628, on the 0474 line. If you want to keep that number, you'll need to move it over to a line that's not going to be cancelled.

Probably nothing will happen before Monday, but I am trying to get 0474 transferred to another service and when that happens any features attached to that account (ringmaster and internet are the ones I know about) will disappear. (The transfer is currently in a red tape quagmire.)

Thanks,

N.
==Nick Notes==
I never was able to get the number transferred because folks at Hull Road kept running up the toll-call charges faster than I could pay them. I finally had to just cancel the account, which (for reasons unclear to me) meant I could no longer transfer the number. I was left owing $450 on that account, which of course I have added to the RDA's bill.

[[details for sitters]]: [[Household routines for sitters|household routines]]
</noinclude>
==Overview==
These routines mostly only apply when the kids are being watched at our house. I will try to make an [[away-from-home routines for kids]] page...
==Morning Stuff==
* Benjamin gets Stramonium and Zander gets Sulfur, 2-3 tablets each, first thing in the morning. (Benjamin may ask for more; I limit it to 4, not because more would be dangerous but just because it starts to get wasteful.) The bottles for these are in the rack to the left of the kitchen door, on the bottom row, to the right. We usually pour the tablets into the lid of the bottle and then overturn the lid directly into their mouths (skin contact supposedly reduces the effectiveness of homeopathics).
==Meals==
Zander and Benjamin usually take care of themselves for breakfast.

Our microwave is apparently about 30-50% stronger than a typical microwave, so cooking times need to be adjusted downward, e.g. 3:30 (three and a half minutes) becomes 2:22.

If you feel like preparing something (lunch or dinner): There's Quinoa and spaghetti; B & Z both like spaghetti, All three of them like Quinoa (Zander less enthusiastic, but will eat it or may decide to make something for himself)... B & Z both like frozen pizza (all-cheese or all-meat); Josh usually does, though you can never be completely sure with him.

Pasta-type stuff (and rice) is in the cabinet to the right of the window above the kitchen sink. There are frozen pizzas left in the laundry room freezer.
==Rules==
This is just the rules that I'm able to think of, typing this at the last minute.

* '''Kids'''
** No kids in the office without adult permission and supervision. They tend to come in uninvited and sometimes we just don't have the energy to fight about it, but the rule is supposed to be that they ask first.
** No kids in the basement. (I have, at times, allowed Benjamin to follow me down the stairs when I went to get something.)
** No kids in the craft room or Mel's room (these are both locked anyway, and they haven't ever tried to unlock either of them... so far)
** No kids in the master bedroom (where you'll be sleeping, at the end of the upstairs hallway)
** No bullying Josh (many of the toys they like belong to him; unfortunately I don't have a list... but this hasn't been a problem for awhile)
** No being mean to cats (this carries a very stiff point-penalty, and fortunately hasn't been a problem for awhile). "Meanness" includes chasing, hitting, threatening, or swatting at (unless in self-defense).
** The computer downstairs belongs to Zander, but Zander usually allows Benjamin to use it. Josh used to get upset if he didn't get a turn as well, but he seems to have exhausted its novelty; he can always go to his computer upstairs if he needs a computer fix.
** The computer upstairs belongs to Josh, but the others are allowed to use it if Josh isn't (especially if Josh is on Zander's computer downstairs).
** Nobody is allowed to threaten anyone else or hit anyone else with anything, or hit parts of the house with anything (especially the wood parts).

Hopefully you'll be keeping them engaged in other things so they won't get all focused on computer games ;-)

* '''Cats'''
** Cats must stay indoors. Not allowed in basement, either (if you go into the basement for anything, be careful that the door has latched). If a cat somehow does get into the basement, just leave the door closed until you hear piteous meowing an hour or two later. Pip is the most likely animal to try "escaping" into the basement; Kestra hasn't done it in a long time.
** Cats are generally fed twice a day, one half-scoop each from the food in the cabinet under the sink and to the right (near the wall). Benjamin can show you, and might even do the feeding himself. (We encourage this.)
** Cats should be kept out of the laundry room if possible; they sometimes take liberties with the dirty clothes on the floor or the clean clothes in bags, baskets, etc. In general, keep the door closed; if a cat manages to get in, and can't be forcibly removed, then leave the door open and check back 5-10 minutes later.
==Points==
We have a "points" system for rewarding good behavior and discouraging bad behavior. It needs some revamping, but Z & B have certain things that they do for which they may ask for "points". The points-tracking sheet is on the hallway door in the dining area. If they ask you to write down points for stuff they have done, just make a note of the date and what was done (including quantities, e.g. how many clothes were put away or how many cans were crushed; those are the two main things they do). If they misbehave, you can either take points away without warning or use point-penalties as a threat. The range is generally from 1 (little negligent things we're trying to discourage) to 10 (stuff that's a problem and they really should have known better).
==Evening Schedule==
Sometime before dark (Fri. and Sat.), check outside the front door to see if any packages have arrived. The UPS and FedEx people have lately been very stealthy when they leave stuff, and we occasionally don't discover packages until the next day...

Supper is sometime between 6 and 7. 8:00 is bedtime. Benjamin usually asks for a cup of water after we're done reading, and we never remember to pre-emptively bring one with us when we go up for reading; maybe your memory will work better than that ;-).

We read until 8:30, generally one chapter (or 15 minutes, whichever comes first) from each from their current book, winding up at 8:30 or a little after on non-school nights. After that, we turn off their bedroom overhead light but leave the light by the door on as a night-light. They also sometimes play a sleep-music CD; feel free to turn this down if it is loud. The kids can get up for water after 8:30, but no running around or talking (at least not loud enough to hear). Obviously it's not a big deal if they oversleep, since it's a weekend, but Zander often has trouble getting up in the morning and we don't want to let him get into a night-owl mode.

After finishing with storytime, Sandy brushes Josh's teeth in the downstairs bathroom. Sometimes he will passively resist this, and if you don't feel like fighting with him about it, that's fine. Most times he is cooperative, but every now and then Nick has to physically lift him up off the couch (or bed), get him standing up, and aim him towards the bathroom. At that point he usually goes the rest of the way to the bathroom and doesn't try to escape. The strawberry toothpaste and the blue-handled toothbrush with the yellow bristles (both on the sink) are his. Sometimes you can even get him to do most of the brushing himself.

Obsolete/CFS Wiki Proposal

Dash McWayne: CFS Wiki Proposal moved to CFS Wiki Proposal ENJOYING BRIAN PEPPERS DAY???

====What's a Wiki?====
Well, first of all, you're looking at one. A wiki is, in short, a web site wherein anyone can add new content or edit existing content. There are measures to prevent abuse ("spamming", e.g. posting pages full of links or messages of commercial, political, or idealogical nature inappropriate to the mission of the wiki site in question), various means of monitoring new input for abuses, and tools for recovering the original content of accidentally or intentionally deleted or mis-edited pages, as well as tracking the source of edits (i.e. who made changes, and when).

In a traditional web site, the webmaster (often an unpaid volunteer or overworked IT staffer with little interest in writing) becomes a very thin bottleneck. Content must be approved, formatted nicely, and included in the site's directory links. Errors are often only discovered after a page is posted, and updates are often needed in the face of changing information.

Not only does the wiki software allow the labor-load to be spread among many editors, it also automates many of the organizing tasks. For example, articles may be categorized, and the page for each category will automatically show an alphabetized list of articles in that category. (See, for example, [[:Category:Durham, NC]] on this wiki.) Links to not-yet-posted articles may be included, and the articles themselves written later simply by clicking on the link. A list of "wanted" articles (i.e. articles which have been linked but not written) is automatically generated. Articles may be moved to a different location within the wiki, and the wiki software will redirect all links. (No more 404 errors!) Pages with multiple sections have tables-of-contents automatically generated (see, for example, the top of this page).

Probably the best example of a wiki is [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia Wikipedia], an on-line encyclopedia in multiple languages whose content now rivals the Encyclopedia Britannica.

The wiki software is free and open-source; [[User:Woozle|I]] have installed it three times, and it never took more than two hours despite various technical issues arising. I spent more time on the logo than on installing the software.
====Why Should CFS Have a Wiki?====
One word: '''Community!''' A Wiki is like a bulletin board that anyone can post on -- from anywhere on the internet -- and which can be expanded as needed -- and whose articles can be searched and organized in various ways.

CFS has a vast, rich resource of teachers (past and present), students, alumni, and other community members who may no longer live in the area, and whose stories and observations may never be heard by more than a few others. A wiki can serve as a repository for community wisdom, a point of contact between community members, and a showcase for the community's values and creative output.
====Costs of Having a Wiki====
The financial cost could be as little as zero, if volunteers agreed to handle the hosting and edit-patrolling for the site. For starters, [[User:Woozle|I]] could do the installation and hosting on the same server which hosts the [[Hypertwiki:About|Hypertwiki]], and some of the edit-patrolling.

In fact, CFS itself need not even take an active part in creating the wiki. I have already created a [[CFS|CFS wiki page]] on this site, which of course (being a wiki) may be edited or have additional pages added by others. (The long url for this page, however, is something of a hinderance to promotion -- <nowiki>http://www.hypertwins.org/wiki/index.php/CFS</nowiki> doesn't roll off the tongue quite as trippingly as would, say, <nowiki>http://wiki.cfsnc.org</nowiki>. In order to have that shorter, more memorable, more-official-sounding address, there would obviously have to be some official CFS involvement.)
====Costs of Not Having a Wiki====
Speaking from a personal point of view: Who will remember who [[Jenny Hall]] (namesake of the Jenny Hall Fund) was, 20 years from now, or that she painted part of the mural still visible on the middle school pavilion? Who, aside from their families, will remember who Jim Millar or [http://www.memorialwall.com/Detailed/46.html Karleton Fyfe] were, aside from names on "adopt-a-highway" signs? How about Carl Dolan? [[Ann V. Simon]]? Who remembers the song recorded in a studio by music teacher Dave Smith and two middle-school girls, "Brownian Motion", or where it can be found? Who remembers that respected local musician [http://www.yeproc.com/artist_info.php?artistId=847 Dexter Romweber] used to be known as "Jon" when he was in the CFS middle school? Who knew that crazy [http://robbiefulks.com/ Robbie Fulks] went on to have a career as a country musician in Chicago? (Well, ok, probably everyone except me...) Who still has a copy of the "Class of 2001" graduation parody issue of the CFS Journal in 1981, or the Course Offerings parody the previous year?

Where will the stories of the school's early days, such as the Klopfer remniscences ("Why Such a Large Water Tower?") in the Spring "We & Thee" (or in the 40th anniversary publication), be available for the community to read, if they missed the original publication? I have no doubt that there are hundreds (if not thousands) of other "lesser" stories which will probably seldom see the light of day once this month's issue is in the recycling bin, if they made it into print at all.

And what about the activities and discoveries of today's students? A CFS wiki could serve as a sort of instant yearbook/newsletter/journal -- photos, essays about trips taken, books read, experiments done... I'm sure my imagination is failing to think of more than a small portion of the uses to which the innovative and active CFS student body could put such a tool.

Placed on a wiki, all such articles could be indexed by author, date, type of article... a wealth of anchoring information for a community seeking to maintain a steady direction in the face of a complex and changing world.

And that's enough of my blabbing for now. Thanks for reading. :-)

==Introduction==
[[category:Anna Nikola]][[category:1997]]This was from an email newsletter I put out briefly in 1997-8 ("The Red Letter Office", Annadems, Annaouncements & Annacdotes section).

==Text==
Nick here.This is the latest from Anna De-central.

1. This past weekend, Anna was putting barrettes on Zooty's head and putting her sweaters on him. (All of them.) She said, "I want Zooty to look like a girl."

2. She then proceeded to find all the shoes in the house and line them up in two rows in the living room.

3. The following Monday, we had to be very quiet on the phone because
Anna's bunny was sleeping in the basket she had prepared, embedded with all the available dishtowels. He was, I quote, "all wrapped up" (a quintessential Anna phrase).

4. This evening (Thursday), Anna was singing one of the School House Rock songs: "Wally Wally Wally getcher adverbs here." She sang it to me on the phone, and I said "how about 'Interjection, for emotion, for excitement, Hallelujah'?" (that being another song from the same tape) to which she replied "No! Wally Wally Wally Wally Wally getcher adverbs here, Wally Wally getcher adverbs here, Wally Wally Wally Wally Wally Wally getcher adverbs here" and so forth. (Sometimes adults just don't _listen_...)

5. "I need to draw for a minute."

This has been the Anna report for December 10, 1997. I'm Harry Reasonable, and you're not. Good evening.

Thanks, I should have asked Bubba if you left anything for me... Maybe
he didn't realize that you left them for me as per my request. Our busy
It does sound like change is in the air. Not only this Kelly Diversified possibility, but if I also end up moving RH operations in with youse guys, that could significantly improve the workflow as Bubba would not have to make a special trip out to Danielsville Rd. to pick up email and would therefore be (I would think) much more "there" when I need to be out of town. We've managed to knock off some large chunks from the backlog of things-in-need-of-doing, so life is slightly less hectic (although the list still wraps around the block). The bathroom drawers are built, but the cabinet door isn't and they all need finishing. And then there's the kitchen...

Various news tidbits:

The ''Observer'' has survived the summer and is now in the middle of Xmas rush advertising. The band has done two shows ("gigs", as they are termed in the vernacular), both successful but not financially profitable. We are currently working on a tape for sale and radio play.

Livia and I delivered three of the four black kittens and their mother (Hecate) to Livia's mother (Rebekah) in Chapel Hill; she then managed to find homes for two of them. Meanwhile Target, the one remaining of our two original cats from NC, was killed on the highway last month or so. Rebekah has given us back the final kitten, as she is allergic to cats and the kitten is a total lovemuffin in need of more attention than her sinuses would allow. That kitten (One) and the one kitten we couldn't catch (Four) are now good friends and race around the house chasing each other. Jessica has sent them both cat toys, without which they could not survive the day. We are trying to keep them inside as much as possible; it isn't terribly easy now, and I imagine it will become much more difficult when the weather heats up again.

Livia has this to add:

"Meanwhile, the garden calls despite the icky wet cold weather. Nick has cleared yet another path through the wild woods. Mubbie and I have planted four blueberries, three butterfly bushes and a ''purple'' abelia. We've spread lime over the summer garden and planted garlic, leeks and catnip. Will the cats be grateful? Personally, I think they'll be more fascinated by the asparagus fronds."

Hope you are all feeling well, especially as regards hospital visitation and so forth. I seem to recall that you all were thinking of visiting NC in the early spring; we'll look forward to seeing you!

Best wishes,

N., First I must say EWWWWW!, How Rebecca of you! Why the major energy in such a hostile way? Is Livia on your ass about back child support and you needed to vent so you could feel like you were in control of
something by shitting on me about $12? Damn dude. I really can't believe you'd say spending $12 of the monies in the account generated by my labors as well as yours would be "Floating me" anything. Seems like
it's be a simple line item and since you see the balance increasing and more to come in behind that, it'd be a very small gesture on your part to just go ahead and reup the domain. It would have taken less time and energy to pay it, say you paid it and were figuring it into the mix. It would have generated some tranquility in your business partners life by letting him know you had his back for $12, since he did help put the $ in the account. Seems like it would have been "Regardless of monies owed, my friends sanity is more important than $12 since he is endeavoring to persevere with the betterment of my reality as one of his goals and there's really enough in the account since we didn't spend any on the LB order".

I've taken a lot of the flak over it being your shit to deal w/@ RH and working to buffer the onslaught by labors not my responsibility as well as posing a defense to shield you from shit and you wanna wanker over $12.

Pay the damn $12 already, we're making money!

You said I should feel free to say what I think. Thassa whattam doin'.

I figured your response would be something like this. I sent a reasonable request to put $12 in before you take $12 out. It wasn't hostile; more like "I thought I'd explained all this before". (If there's any hostility, it comes from knowing from experience that I will invariably get an argument whenever I put my
boundaries someplace you don't want them, and it's becoming a sore point.)

Yes, the balance is increasing (positively), but it's still quite negative -- as I explained in my email. What part of "you owe me" do you not understand? I'm bending over backwards to be reasonable by not insisting that it _all_ be paid back before I'd consider paying the $12.

Put another way: When it comes to money, y'all sometimes seem like small children fighting over toys. "Here's a red one for you and a blue one for you." "But I want a blue one!" "Joey, can I give your brother the blue one and I'll give you the red one instead?" "NOOO! Dat's MYY blue!!" "<sigh> Ok, here -- I've got another red one for you." "Hey, dat's no fair! He's got TWO!!!" "Ok, then here's a blue one for you, so you each have one red and one blue." "NOOO! I want a RED one like HE'S got!!!"

'''Fact 1''': Measured since June 1, money has gone out for RDA expenses and much less has come back in than went out.

'''Fact 2''': We're in a better situation than we were 3 weeks ago, but things are still tight. $12 might or might not be the difference between a positive balance and a negative balance, if something unexpected came through... and if I felt confident that it wouldn't make that difference (and that the balance were, in fact, safely positive), there are already Red House domains I'm putting off renewing, not to mention other small expenses. In other words, even if that $12 is available, it's already spoken for many times over.

'''Fact 3''': Red House funds are not RDA funds.

In other words: there are only so many toys; I've given you a lot of mine because you said you needed them, and now you're saying it's no fair because I've still got some left and you need more.

Or, put still a different way: Don't push my buttons. Asking me to loan you more money is one of them.

Or, put yet another way: why is it suddenly my responsibility to pay your bills? I took care of your domain renewals before when I had enough cash to go around (and later, when I didn't really have enough) because for some reason I thought you were going to pay me back -- like, soon, like within a month or so. Not many months later. Not years later. And certainly not acting like it never happened, and asking for more.

Actually, it was more like an order -- "take care of this, you must owe it to us because we've been working hard." Who was it actually _did_ most of the inventory, finally, making possible those recent sales? How much inventory have you done since I left? How much of the stuff which was going to be shipped on Monday has actually gotten shipped (today being Friday)?

I've already played the part of covering you when you were having a hard time, because I still had some trust that there would be reciprocity -- you would pay back what RH had lent so that RH would have its operating funds intact (and so that when there _were_ funds to disburse, they would be actual cash instead of just going to pay back debt). Instead, what I hear is some kind of squatter mentality -- "I've got it now, so it's mine, and what else have you got cuz I need more."

You're taking a lot of flak? From whom? Stop accepting it! That was one of my complaints about Livia; she would never tell Rebekah to talk to ME when R had issues about me. She would pass on things that R would say, but I couldn't respond without putting her in the middle (which didn't work very well because of course she didn't really agree with my positions). And if I responded directly, it was inappropriate because it wasn't my conversation.

I never asked you to put yourself in the middle. If someone's putting pressure on you and you decide not to comply, be sure that your stand is for your own reasons. Say only what you believe, and not what you think Nick might say if asked. It's much easier to be right about your own reasons than about someone
else's.

(And for the record, at the moment I'm pretty much totally ignoring the child support issue except insofar as I'm considering challenging it; any payments will come out of my own earnings if at all -- _not_ from RH profits.)

Sincerely,

N.
==16:17 from Nick==
===Notes===
Not sure what caused the turnaround here, but I'd guess that we had a verbal conversation in which Bubba agreed to deposit $12 which would probably show up in the online accounting several days later. Note that there does not seem to be a $12 deposit anytime during the remainder of the year in the [[SvsG:2002 Accounting|2002 Accounting]]; this might mean that I never included it, but more likely (as I was paying closer attention to the accounting by this time) Bubba never deposited the promised $12. A double-check of the bank statement from this period would be a good idea, however.
{{hdrline|Subject|icq last night}}
{{email header stop}}

This was the only message I received from you this morning:

<nowiki>=== icq ===</nowiki>
{{quoteon}}'''Bubba (9:18 PM)''' : BK

'''Bubba (9:23 PM)''' : Divisions are good in business to keep things straight, I agree and quantifying who is more valuable and who deserves what now after it's been built is a little late to start for us as far as I see it.{{quoteoff}}
<nowiki>=== end ===</nowiki>

So I'll respond to it:

1. Why do you think it's a little late?

2. It has become plain to me that it's necessary, whether or not it's too late. If it's too late, then is there any hope for our continued collaboration? In what sense is it too late?

We started out with the presumption that it (tracking & itemization) wasn't necessary, because we would each pull our eight and thereby keep things going. Many $k later (and I'm not talking about loans to RDA, just what I've pumped into RH) I've finally realized that it simply hasn't been working that way. I've been taking nearly all the responsibility for keeping things going, and you've been giving me grief whenever I try to plug the leaks.

3. Side issue: it's not "who is more important", or even how important we each are. It's not about importance. This is not a contest. It's about preserving the value of sweat equity, not to mention preserving the value of actual cash invested.

And I think I should also respond again to this:

<nowiki>=== icq ===</nowiki>
{{quoteon}}'''Bubba (9:02 PM)''' : do you really feel you're being reasonable or justifying why I still get no $ out of the deal or if you have your way never will and anything done to this point is yours by proxy?{{quoteoff}}
<nowiki>=== end ===</nowiki>

Let me be plain. I'm not saying I don't want to work with you anymore; I *am* saying I cannot deal with working with you under the existing arrangement (if you can call it an "arrangement"; it was never very clear to me). I have been trying (for at least a year or 2 now) to rearrange and clarify that arrangement in a way that is mutually satisfactory.

If I was planning to pull the rug out from under you, I would have long ago given up trying to work out compromises because all my attempts thus far have seemed only to get you angry at me. The way forward would have been much smoother for me if I had quietly gone on the way we've been going on, saying "yes Bubba" on cue and then one day just suddenly not being there. I have plenty of more enjoyable, more productive things to do than write emails outlining possible solutions to our mutual problem.

The effort I have put into thinking through our situation and trying to reach a compromise -- rather than just saying "screw it" and bagging out -- seems to be almost entirely unappreciated and gets me very little except grief from you or
Lynne. I've been trying very hard to see all sides of the situation; the more I get yelled at (chastized, accused, whatever you want to call it), the harder it is to see the other sides.

I'm not sure what you mean by "by proxy" ("by default", perhaps?), but I do say that you have already been paid any compensation we had already agreed on, i.e. the 80% of sales less cost of stock, by dint of the fact that you borrowed much
more than you have earned. This was a really sweet deal for the RDA, because I was letting you borrow money (for merch) interest-free AND paying you for the use of that money (which you borrowed). I've been trying to work out what <u>other</u> compensation you might be entitled to (either cash or percentage points) for your contributions to RH in general, and you're making it very difficult.

And while I'm on a roll, I'll respond to this thread:

<nowiki>=== icq ===</nowiki>
{{quoteon}}'''Bubba (9:06 PM)''' : the underlying thing that bothers me most is that you keep acting like anything I've done so far has been to play w/some images and that counts for nothing

...

'''Bubba (9:07 PM)''' : sort of like I jumped on an existing wagon and had nothing to do w/building it to begin with.

...

'''Bubba (9:10 PM)''' : ok, the programming thus far has been you and what parts that are intrigal to the store are as a result of me suggesting something that you said was a no until I drew it on the white board and you'd cock your head and say, "Hold on a minute, let me try something"?

'''woozle (9:10 PM)''' : is that a question or information?

'''Bubba (9:11 PM)''' : had I not crossed the dividing line and ventured into your territory would we have come up w/that piece that led to other pieces, so what % gets assigned to that particular item if it bled into other parts of the program?{{quoteoff}}
<nowiki>=== end ===</nowiki>

You mention two of your contributions to the business here: '''1.''' The image work; '''2.''' The idea-bouncing.

'''Item 1''': I don't know how you got the idea that I'm trying to dismiss the image work as inconsequential when I've actually been saying that I think it was substantial, and in my opinion more valuable than item 2. If you set aside the
question of whether I had agreed that the shirts would be a good direction to go in and would be worth the effort (yours and mine), then that was work which unquestionably needed to be done and from which we are still benefitting.

The question of whether I had agreed about the shirts is still a question. Further, we had no terms for how your work was going to be compensated. My somewhat sketchy understanding at the time was that you were willing to do the work if it gave you the opportunity to make a percentage off the sales. Lynne later bridled intensely when I suggested that this was the deal, so I suspect that there was a misunderstanding.

Whatever <u>I</u> might have agreed to, however, is no more than the above -- to whatever extent I agreed with anything. Nothing was ever put down in writing, so it's quite debatable that I agreed to share anything at all; the process was
more like gradual scope-creep than what anyone would call an agreement. I thought you were offering to help contact bands and build up the music selection; before I knew it, I had to completely rewrite the store to accomodate t-shirts and art and drop the CDs altogether, and you and Lynne were living in my control room, keeping the food pantry in my practice space, and storing buses all over my yard and blocking my view of the woods. (And you want to take <u>credit</u> for this? But I'm getting ahead of myself; see item 2.)

Perhaps I believed the image work was in exchange for office space and equipment (and internet access, and tech support, and web hosting, and a mailing address) which you badly needed for the (then-new) RDA; a lot of what you and Lynne said
at the time sounded like that was a big part of the motivation for getting involved with Red House. I also seem to recall that I asked you, around the beginning of the Wisconsin era when I first got the idea that you were going to be doing a lot of work on the store, to keep track of your hours. The fact that I asked and you declined does *not* make me look bad; it makes it look more like you went in with the full intention of causing the situation we are now in, where you can claim whatever share you want because there's no proof of what was agreed or what we've each contributed.

As I have said before, I am going out of my way to be fair in trying to reconstruct some kind of mutually satisfactory agreement from this scrap-heap of unwritten unclarity. If we can keep cooperating towards a mutual agreement, I will do my best to see that you receive fair compensation, whether we keep working together or not. If you keep fighting me over it, then I would remind you of the scene in The Search for Spock where Kirk offers his opponent a hand up so he won't fall into the lava-filled chasm. At this point, I fully expect I will ultimately be added to the long list of people who have stabbed you in the back, as there doesn't seem to be any way out other than to do exactly what you want -- but I will foolishly keep trying until I have exhausted all the options.

'''Item 2''': Taking credit for prodding me in the "right" direction, when I was the one who actually did the work of figuring out how to make those ideas function and then writing and testing the code (and integrating it into the existing
framework of the store, etc. etc.), strikes me as being like the grain of sand taking credit for the pearl. How do you know that on my own I wouldn't have arrived at those same ideas, or perhaps better ones? I'm obviously fully capable of conceiving and implementing them; conversely, I don't think you could have done anything with them yourself.

[ "'But it's mine!' screamed the bird. 'You stole it from me! Get out of my nest, and get out of my tree!'" -- Horton Hatches the Egg ]

(Side issue: how may of those ideas are we still using? Just what ideas are we actually talking about? I think we need to make a list.)

I'm also highly skeptical about the "rightness" of the suggestions you contributed. I didn't want to shoot you down for trying to be helpful at the time, but if you're going to wear those suggestions on your chest like medals and try to use them to impress me with how important your contribution has been, then I have to say waitaminnit. (Like, wouldn't you rather take credit for something useful? Like, say, image work?)

All for now,

N., as we agreed - for your 20% [approx 40+% of the net] you agreed to pack/ship & do customer service. The software was 50/50... You, by the way, were the one who said that it was the work of the two of us as a team that made it possible to come up with the product [IE the software] to begin with and that 50/50 was the only way it could go. That is why I had no problem pitching in on the packing and shipping and doing some of the customer service, so that you could bring the software to a point where it could be marketed. At that point, you would resume the tasks you originally agreed to cover for the store while I move forward with the marketing of the software. Though you have filled the time I've saved you with things other than finishing the software, I would probably still be willing to help you with the packing and shipping had you not moved to Durham. I was the one that thought it should still be done from here even after you left so I didn't have to pack partial orders and add to the shipping cost (which cuts into my portion of the profits as it isn't covered in the customer's costs) I'd order, pull, pack and print slips and you could do the cards and customer service which would have been an equitable split by me. The choice to split the operation was yours, against my wishes and a direct contradiction to your commitment to put your all into the business for one solid year after you divorced Livia. It seriously damaged my level of trust in our relationship when I learned that at the time you made that agreement, you had already told Juliet that you were moving to NC along with a time frame. I had to learn about this from Juliet while you had Lynne looking for bigger houses to accommodate the whole operation.

Part of the indignant energy that you feel from me is that it feels beyond presumptuous that you repeatedly attempt to reopen a dialogue about agreements upon which I based my level of participation for the past six years. Despite your assurances to the contrary, your move has changed a lot of things, just as I said it would. It has changed my level of trust in you. It's changed how much I can help you with packing and shipping. It has pretty much eliminated the time we have to work together and has left Lynne and I holding the bag on several fronts. It does not, however, change our original agreement about the split.

B.

P.S. I'm reminded of the comment you made in the living room, "I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure it doesn't work before I quit working on it" and now it seems sort of like you're saying, "Well, I made it quit working, so now we can re-negotiate our original terms since I've made it impossible to continue as per our original agreement", which seems to equate roughly with the idea of going back on what was originally agreed upon just because it is now inconvenient, while avoiding responsibility for the devastating outcomes -- which apparently further equates to your wanting to itemize individual efforts that can no longer be undertaken because of choices you made that contributed to the stagnation of the joint enterprise (be that family, business, or whatever) in an effort to introduce a reduction in my percentage that would be more reflective of your lack of consideration and regard for me since you decided to change your life to be more suitable to your needs and the rather extensive needs of some of those in your newly chosen surroundings. Those choices are
yours... and though I feel they have cost US much... there are some things to which you can't make unilateral changes... our original agreements about the split are among those not up for re-negotiation.

P.P.S. As for me glaring in some sort of a rage while pounding on the keyboard, imagine it as you must, however, I'm merely responding to your thoughts. Of course, I have energy about it, who wouldn't? My commitment is to working through the process, which does not allow for a whole lot of rage. I agree, that we are in somewhat of a "stalemate" but that it is only so difficult because you continually try to begin negotiations with the assumption that you can change the original agreements through a process of justification in which you wish me to participate. I'm not so much "mad" as I am unwilling to participate in this drivel at this time. We'll have to discuss this further. Maybe you could check in with me after the 20th when I'm done with lofts.

Nonetheless, I will respond to your points.

Bubba wrote:

{{quoteon}}N., as we agreed - for your 20% [approx 40+% of the net] you agreed to pack/ship & do customer service. The software was 50/50... You, by the way, were the one who said that it was the work of the two of us as a team that made it possible to come up with the product [IE the software] to begin with and that 50/50 was the only way it could go.{{quoteoff}}

The first part, about the 20%, is a very coarse outline of the terms I offered you verbally circa 1998-9 when the RDA's debt started to mount. The most I remember getting was a vague nod or maybe "uh-huh" from Lynne; certainly nothing in writing and not even a clear verbal signal that <u>I</u> should put the offer in writing so we would have a record of it. Later attempts to put it in writing were met with outrage from Lynne or you.

About the software & 50/50, I don't remember saying that. Perhaps I said something which you interpreted that way. I might have said that *if* we were to proceed with developing the software (i.e. if sufficient funds became available that I could devote sufficient time to make it doable), I would be willing to split the proceeds 50-50 given that you were going to
handle the marketing. (See also my response to your next paragraph.)

{{quoteon}}That is why I had no problem pitching in on the packing and shipping and doing some of the customer service, so that you could bring the software to a point where it could be marketed. At that point, you would resume the tasks you originally agreed to cover for the store while I move forward with the marketing of the software.{{quoteoff}}

You make it sound like we had a plan for this. This was never a plan; this is what I would have <u>liked</u> to do, and we discussed doing it as a hypothetical direction we could take, but I was *never* able to drop customer service OR work entirely on the software because: for the first, you never covered CS reliably enough that I could leave it in your hands, and for the second we were constantly having financial crises which required my full attention.

{{quoteon}}Though you have filled the time I've saved you with things other than finishing the software,{{quoteoff}}

My first reaction is that that's an outrageous claim... but if I ignore the implication that I was supposed to be using all my spare time to work on the software (which, again, was *never* something I said I could do *until* the store was making enough money that I could draw on it for living expenses -- which I have *not* been doing -- and that it would take many months to produce a saleable product), then the remaining claims are:

''1. You have saved me time''

-- arguable, but what are we talking about specifically? Areas in which you could have saved me time that I can think of are: (a) customer service (b) shipping (c) placing restock orders (d) image processing. In order: a. Nope. Your coverage of CS was always spotty and erratic. b. I spend so much time and energy chasing after you for shipping data that it hasn't been worth it. c. I've automated that to the point where it's just as easy for me to do it. d. You do remember that for every image you process, there's some work required on my end, right? I have to enter catalog data and sometimes rout out bugs which choose that time to rear their ugly heads, plus time rebuilding and uploading the web pages once everything's been entered. So you "save" me time when I don't have to process the images myself, but my time still isn't freed up because I have to do the other end of the process.

''2. I have been doing other things besides finishing the software''

-- meaning I shouldn't have been doing shipping, CS, and restocking?

Overall: I thought we'd resolved this thing about the software months ago. I never promised to finish it soon, much less on a deadline; I said I would work on it incrementally, as time permitted, but that to really get it going in the near term would require resources we don't currently have. Why do you keep saying I made a promise to develop it?

{{quoteon}}I would probably still be willing to help you with the packing and shipping had you not moved to Durham. I was the one that thought it should still be done from here even after you left so I didn't have to pack partial orders and add to the shipping cost (which cuts into my portion of the profits as it isn't covered in the customer's costs) I'd order, pull, pack and print slips and you could do the cards and customer service which would have been an equitable split by me. The choice to split the operation was yours, against my wishes and a direct contradiction to your commitment to put your all into the business for one solid year after you divorced Livia.{{quoteoff}}

I don't know why we're suddenly talking about the splitting up of the shipping operations, but here's my response.

You seem to be saying the following:

''1. You're no longer willing to help with the packing and shipping since I moved to Durham.''

''2. Internal shipping costs cut into your portion of the profits.''

''3. I committed to a year of putting my all into the business for a solid year post-Livia.''

''4. I broke that promise.''

''5. Moving to NC was a violation of that promise.''

'''#1''' -- this is the first I've heard of this. You were doing shipping and packing up to the point that I pulled Athens inventory from the DB a few weeks ago. Are you saying you were doing this unwillingly?

'''#2''': This depends on whether you're talking about your 80%-less-restocks share or the portion of the business-as-a-whole you could be entitled to (the exact percentage of which is, I thought, one of the issues we were trying to resolve). Under the terms I had in mind, it would not cut into the 80%. Obviously any extra costs would affect your overall portion, but I do not believe they have exceeded $15 to date, over about 4 months of shipping.

'''#3''' -- I don't know if this is true; I do recall stating my *intention* to do something like that. A statement of intention is not a promise, nor do I recall being asked to make it a promise.

'''#4''' is definitely not true. (If I had wanted to neglect the business *and* do better financially, I could have continued working for Juliet.) I have continued to put my "all" into the business, hence all these emails trying to straighten this mess out so it can stop being a headache.

'''#5''': How? I didn't see how I could continue to operate the business given the conditions in Athens. The fact that you did not and do not see this shows how little attention you were/are paying to the financial necessities of running a business.

{{{quoteon}}It seriously damaged my level of trust in our relationship when I learned that at the time you made that agreement, you had already told Juliet that you were moving to NC along with a time frame.{{quoteoff}}

I told her that it was a *possibility* that I was thinking about, which was true. She was paying for my work, hence I felt obligated to give her a heads-up in case there might be a need to replace me. You were not paying for my work (you were, in fact, borrowing large sums from me without my consent), nor did our work together depend on my physical presence -- hence I did not feel the need to give you as much advance notice of what was at that time still hypothetical.

Further, you made it very difficult for me to talk about such things with you; I'm sure I mentioned at some point that the situation in Athens was becoming increasingly impossible for me, but every time I tried to discuss it with you there was so much resistance to the idea of moving that I couldn't make any headway communicating.

I have suggested repeatedly that we have communications problems. You pooh-pooh this suggestion every time I bring it up. I would say this is just a case in point.

{{quoteon}}I had to learn about this from Juliet while you had Lynne looking for bigger houses to accommodate the whole operation.{{quoteoff}}

From what I remember, looking for houses was earlier -- and it was Lynne's idea. (My idea was to put stuff in storage and get an apartment.)

If there was any house-hunting going on at the time I was moving to NC, and a suitable house had been found, I might have moved there instead *if* we could have found a way to ensure that it was affordable.

I also seem to recall that the situation became abruptly more untenable for me around this time due to various actions of Lynne's; I would have to dig through my records to be more specific. (I think that her yelling at me about not moving out of RH on her schedule, regardless of prior agreements with you, might have been one of them; that encounter definitely exceeded my boundaries.)

{{quoteon}}Part of the indignant energy that you feel from me is that it feels beyond presumptuous that you repeatedly attempt to reopen a dialogue about agreements upon which I based my level of participation for the past six years.{{quoteoff}}

Show me the agreements we made. I've been asking you to tell me what they were for almost as long as you now claim they've been in effect.

You should never base six years of participation upon vagueness.

Despite your assurances to the contrary, your move has changed a lot of things, just as I said it would.

Yes, you are right, it has. It has meant that I can reliably keep money in the RH accounts. It has meant that I can afford to eat on a regular basis. It has meant that I can be sure I have enough gas to get to the post office. It has meant that I can buy envelopes and other shipping supplies when needed. I don't think that's what you meant, though.

{{quoteon}}It has changed my level of trust in you. It's changed how much I can help you with packing and shipping.{{quoteoff}}

Not that I've really noticed. You used to sort the incoming shipments, but I've worked out ways to automate parts of that so that it takes one person less time than it used to take two people; also we now track what is ordered from suppliers versus what they actually send. Overall this end of operations has improved significantly from when we were doing it together.

{{quoteon}}It has pretty much eliminated the time we have to work together and has left Lynne and I holding the bag on several fronts. It does not, however, change our original agreement about the split.{{quoteoff}}

You're pouring on the guilt, and I'm not buying it. For every bag you claim to be holding, I have several. Futher, there were NO agreements. There were informal terms I offered you which were never formally accepted, so I was never sure if they were in effect. I have been trying to be ethical in maintaining those terms, despite their vagueness and your lack of any appreciation for my attempts to maintain them in the face of adversity.

{{quoteon}}P.S. I'm reminded of the comment you made in the living room, "I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure it doesn't work before I quit working on it" and now it seems sort of like you're saying, "Well, I made it quit working, so now we can re-negotiate our original terms since I've made it impossible to continue as per our original agreement"{{quoteoff}}

Do I have to go through my records and list all the things which caused it not to work? The business continues to function. What has failed is our attempt to work together without clear delineations. Your shit got in the way, Bubba, and I got out of its way and am now calling you on it.

{{quoteon}}, which seems to equate roughly with the idea of going back on what was originally agreed upon just because it is now inconvenient,{{quoteoff}}

Show me what we agreed on.

{{quoteon}}while avoiding responsibility for the devastating outcomes -- which apparently further equates to your wanting to itemize individual efforts that can no longer be undertaken because of choices you made that contributed to the stagnation of the joint enterprise (be that family, business, or whatever) in an effort to introduce a reduction in my percentage that would be more reflective of your lack of consideration and regard for me since you decided to change your life to be more suitable to your needs and the rather extensive needs of some of those in your newly chosen surroundings.{{quoteoff}}

Wow, you love to cram implications and presumptions in so fast nobody can catch 'em, don't you. Ok, I broke apart the last two bunches; it's your turn.

{{quoteon}}Those choices are yours... and though I feel they have cost US much... there are some things to which you can't make unilateral changes... our original agreements about the split are among those not up for re-negotiation.{{quoteoff}}

Which "us" are you talking about? Me & you, or you & Lynne?

And how do you intend to monitor or enforce them if you can't even say what they are? (Your opening paragraph is insufficiently specific. If you like, I can try make a list of questions it doesn't answer.)

{{quoteon}}P.P.S. As for me glaring in some sort of a rage while pounding on the keyboard, imagine it as you must, however, I'm merely responding to your thoughts. Of course, I have energy about it, who wouldn't? My commitment is to working through the process, which does not allow for a whole lot of rage. I agree, that we are in somewhat of a "stalemate" but that it is only so difficult because you continually try to begin negotiations with the assumption that you can change the original agreements through a process of justification in which you wish me to participate.{{quoteoff}}

Again the presumption that there were agreements. I have been campaigning for agreements for many years now; it is surreally bizarre that you are now holding me to agreements which never happened because you declined to be involved in making any.

{{quoteon}}I'm not so much "mad" as I am unwilling to participate in this drivel at this time. We'll have to discuss this further. Maybe you could check in with me after the 20th when I'm done with lofts.{{quoteoff}}

Whenever. That's the great thing about email; you can deal with it when you have time. Talk to you then...
Hi Lynne,

At this point I'm not sure I'll be able to get my stuff out of trailer #3 by the time your final deadline comes around (this coming weekend), so I'm wondering when I would need to get you (or the rental company) the $150 to hold it for next month.
We should take some of your backgrounds and make them available on a "free backgrounds" page. Giveaway art like that is a draw, and we could put a banner ad for vbz.net at the top (and some explanation that they were created for vbz). We could also advertise your graphic services -- show sample logos, the "404" (maybe we should put a little "vbz.net" unobtrusively embedded in the corner of one of the numerals before someone lifts it for their web site), banners, other artwork you've done for vbz.
{{SvsG Email|2003}}[[Category:SvsG Documents]]
==Nick Notes==
The following is my own account of events, typed on or about 11/28 (i.e. soon after returning to Durham).

'''Dating''': I was initially unsure of the dates on which these events occurred, as I had written "Tuesday" but also "11/24" (which was a Monday), and the police report says "11/25". Checking back in chat logs for that day, it appears that 11/25 is the correct date, so I have amended the document to show the correct date. Other than that, it is exactly as written on or about 11/28.
==Synopsis==
I got the important stuff from the trailer. I called the police so they could witness that L&B are holding the Benz (for which they *do* have the keys), piano, and merchandise as security (which I do not believe is legal, in the absence of a contract) against a debt I supposedly owe them but for which they have so far declined to produce any accounting, much less evidence or proof. I am pursuing legal action against them to recover those items but can't do anything until Monday at this point.
==Text==
===What Happened===
Tuesday morning (11/25): rented UHaul around 9:00 (due back at 6). Showed up at Hull Road around 9:30-10:00 and went back to check out the situation.

All three trailers (mine was #3) were gone.

I knocked on the door; Lynne answered. I demanded to know where my stuff was (I think I managed to avoid inserting "the hell", though I certainly thought it). Lynne said it was down at Neff Rental and that I could retrieve it. I asked for their phone number. Her reply, as best I can remember, was a very frosty "I don't think that's something I need to be jumping up and doing for you right now."

The nearest phone book was back at Livia's, so I started to get into the truck to drive back over there (at 50 cents/mile plus gas) but of course Lynne kept adding parting shots, and after the second one I stopped answering and got into the truck. Bubba appeared, ran around to the driver's side of the truck and tried to engage me further... I responded briefly and then tried to drive off &mdash; he was almost clinging to the mirror, but I kept going (looked back to make sure I hadn't run anyone over, if only because of the possible legal consequences).

Got to Livia's. Talked to Neff Rental, established that yes in fact the trailer was still there and there was no problem with my accessing it &ndash; I specifically asked if there was an outstanding balance; apparently there had been, and that was why it was hauled off, but it had been paid up.

(I think one of Lynne's parting shots was about how she had gone to the *great* trouble of paying up the bill for *my* trailer so *I* could access it, like she was doing me some special favor... they seemed to be under the illusion that I owe them storage fees for previous years, and I have no idea upon what basis they're trying to claim this (what was I storing??). The only thing I can think of is storage for the merchandise, and that would be a very iffy claim at best. Another one of her parting shots was that if I had let them know I was coming, she would have *told* me the trailer was down at Neff. Never mind that she totally failed to respond the last time I tried to let them know when I was coming, never mind that she should have warned me if they were behind on payments, never mind that she should have told me when it happened ''regardless'', and never mind that I simply don't believe her. What can I say; the lawyer was right.)

The guy at Neff said he wouldn't clean out the trailer and dump everything until December 5.

Conferred with Sandy about what the priority should be at that point; she was of the opinion that since the trailer was "safe", i.e. out of L&B's hands, I should ask for the rest of the stuff and call the police if they withheld any of it. So I drove back over, still in the truck (my car being out at the UHaul place, about 40 minutes round trip).

L&B had left; youngest daughter Angela (age about 20; Adrian's mom) answered the door and said they had gone on a couple of errands; she wasn't sure where, but thought one of them was Neff Rental. (I have no idea if they actually went there or not, but they may have been hoping for a captive audience &ndash; they could slow me down while I was moving stuff, and maybe talk me into something.) I asked Angela if she knew where the Benz keys were, and she said she didn't and also that Bubba had said I wasn't allowed to take it. "Something about a contract", she said. "I guess I'll have to pursue this through channels," I said.

I immediately called Neff again and let them know that I had been renting the trailer from L&B and that L&B did not have my permission to go into it &ndash; not that Neff would necessarily have known if they showed up; it's a pretty big parking lot, and the trailer units are stored out back, out of sight from the front office.

The thing to do seemed to be to *try* to move the Benz, and only take further action if prevented (either by Angela or by L&B returning), so I called the Benz repair place to get towing advice. The guy there seemed to think that it might be difficult to move without the key &ndash; and the problem would be more on the delivery side than the pickup side ("where to put it" was the problem, he said, if it was "immobile"); I don't quite get the details, but the upshot was that it would be significantly easier with the key.

Just then L&B pulled back in the driveway, so I finished up with the auto guy. I asked L&B for the Benz, the piano, and the merch. They would never outright say "no"... I called the police.

L&B disappeared for a bit, so I called Sandy to let her know what was going on. A minute or two into the conversation, Bubba shows up and I tell Sandy I have to go &ndash; at which Bubba says (and I have to quote this, just because it was so incredibly rude and ugly) "So, she's still got her hand up your butt even from three hundred miles away."

Bubba then furiously pulled out all the same old arguments and practiced them on me some more. Lynne at least seemed to understand that it had gone beyond the point of convincing me and that he might as well save his arguments for the courtoom. He kept going regardless; I re-iterated this point for the fifth or sixth time in a sort of sing-song voice, at which point Lynne made some pointed comment about how extremely annoying I was being. I pointed out that they were the ones bugging me, I was just trying to wait for the police. Someone (probably B) suggested that I should leave... I pointed out that leaving the scene (which could probably officially be classified as a "crime scene" at that point) might well be frowned upon, which they seemed to find surprising.

During the course of this conversation, Bubba walked flat-footed into two complete self-contradictions (I didn't notice until soon afterwards). First, he claimed he had mailed the keys to me months ago. (He tried to get me upset by suggesting that he might have mailed them to my address in Wisconsin.) Later in the conversation, he pulled them out and dangled them in front of me saying "you should have checked the *ignition*, idiot!" then ran away around the front of the truck &ndash; clearly hoping I would grab for it, chase him, etc. (Note: I had not, in fact checked the ignition... nevertheless, it would be just like Bubba to say something like this even if the keys had been in his pocket the whole time; seems to be his idea of deep humor. He probably likes kicking anthills for entertainment, too.) The second contradition starts with Bubba saying "A verbal agreement is legally binding in the state of Georgia!", as if he had just looked it up at the library, and ends with something one of the policemen said which I'll get to shortly.

The police arrived while he was still haranguing me; I think he had just said something particularly outrageous... was that when he tried to claim co-authorship of the software I wrote for the store, or was that earlier? "It's my business, you were just the programmer; you were working for me" is more or less verbatim... I asked how it could be that if it was his business, I was the only one who knew how to make anything work. He said something about not being involved in those areas... I think I was saying something about not knowing what reality he was living in but wishing he would go back there so I could just sit and wait for the police &ndash; when they did, in fact, show up.

I wish I had a recording of the conversation with the police. (Actually, I wish I had recordings of all our conversations going back to 1997, but that kind of goes without saying.) L&B kept trying their usual delaying tactics: change the subject, don't give a definitive answer... and the main policeman let them do it to a certain extent (I'm afraid I allowed myself a few retorts here and there &ndash;0 mainly when Bubba tried to claim I was his brother, and in response to something he said about the Benz as if they'd been keeping it safe as a favor to me instead of wrecking it -- "Lynne didn't *wreck* it; she ran into an obstacle", quoth he) but eventually came down to "what items are you guys going to let Nick take?" and the answer was nothing except the stuff in the trailer (which was out of their hands anyway).

The policeman advised that I should maybe try to call them back in a few hours, "after tempers have cooled", and Lynne confirmed that she might be able to get Bubba to back down... as it turned out, I didn't have time and I'm just as glad I didn't; I suspect it was just more delaying tactics and maybe a dash of "good cop - bad cop": if I would make some token concessions, maybe she could talk Bubba into letting me have some things; he's very upset about all this, you know... except that the concessions would be major, and the things would be minor and few (if any).

As they were finishing up, the policeman said "You know, I really hope you guys have something in writing, otherwise somebody's gonna get screwed. One or the other of you." Which kind of seemed a good answer to Bubba's earlier statement about verbal agreements being legally binding. (Never mind that you can't enforce something if nobody knows what it was. Or can remember the details. Or if the two people involved remember it differently. Or any other number of caveats.)

The upshot of the situation seemed to be that as long as there was a dispute, all the police could do was to witness that there had been a dispute and that I would need to take it up with the Magistrate's court to get a decision. There didn't seem to be time enough to get that started and still get finished with the truck by 6; since I had gone to the trouble of renting the truck, I decided to proceed with Mission A (getting the stuff out of the trailer).

Shortly after noon, I took the truck down to Neff.

It took a bit of backing and filling to get the back of the truck close to the back of the trailer, but after about 10 minutes I had it in pretty good proximity at about a 45-degree angle; easy enough to hop from one to the other.

When I had *originally* put my stuff in the trailer, it was parked on a mild slope. I had put up some free-standing shelves (boards with coke-can "bricks" separating them) leaning against the downslope wall so stuff could be more accessible for moving, because a lot of the stuff I needed to store is just loose equipment with no way to stack it.

And as expected, those shelves had mostly fallen over during the ride. Most of the damage was to some old turntables I had salvaged -- fortunately none that were working properly in the first place. The old Dual turntable with the hardwood base survived without a scratch. (The Technics direct-drive I salvaged for Tigger back at Brown was, however, one of the ones that got creamed.) About half the strings in the clavichord got snapped, but the exterior and innards seemed otherwise ok. (Maybe they can be replaced with guitar strings? Not sure.)

Livia had given me a source of manual labor to draw on if I needed it (a local company -- $14/hour, 4-hour minimum); I decided to start in on the mess for a little while before calling for help. I also had a deadline which, I thought, might mean that I would need to leave too soon for anyone to get down to help me -- the office to the storage place closed at 2pm.

At about 1:30, I had moved the couch (the largest item) and a sizable chunk of the rest of the stuff and decided I had better call the storage place and see what could be done. It turned out I could rent the storage over the phone -- so my only deadline was the truck return at 6pm.

I had the truck mostly full by 4pm and was doing triage at that point -- grab the stuff that's important and set the rest aside. And then I got to the back and realized I didn't have the loft bed (which I made in 1984 or so), significant parts of which were behind things which had fallen down and needed cleaning up, and also the cushions for the couch...

Did a whirlwind excavation of the bed and cushions, loaded the various components on top of everything else, did one last look-around for anything important (grabbed a few more boxes and smallish things), made some cursory efforts at tying things down, and closed all the doors. (Had to pull away from the trailer to close its doors.) Then drove -- very carefully -- to the storage place, on Danielsville Road about two miles south of Livia's house.

I had to leave the Great Big Enormous Speakers I foolishly purchased the previous time I lived in NC, when I had a nice big room for them... and a number of boxes of mostly magazines but which might easily have some important paperwork tucked in them... and the IBM S/9000, which worked the last time I powered it up but which has been through an awful lot since then... and the Big Honking Mixing Board.

(For those who don't know, supposedly this was the mixing board used on R.E.M.'s first two albums. Soon after I bought the board in 1994 or so, supposedly Dan Dudley -- formerly of MoG -- ran into Bill Berry at a bar in downtown Athens, which I could believe, and confirmed that the description matched what Bill remembered. So... the board doesn't work and is highly impractical for my current needs, but I'd *really* hate to let it just get tossed out. More on this later.)

Anyway, back to the truck, driving to the storage place:

Amazingly, nothing fell. I had "mom's attic" full of totally unsecured bits and pieces, including a set of little plastic component drawers which would have spilled stuff all over the place if it had fallen -- and nothing did. The rest of the stuff was packed so tightly that there wasn't much it could have done, but still... it seemed like a good sign.

At 5:45, the light was fading and I was still about 15 minutes from being done. When done, I would need to tank up (if UHaul had to fill up, it would be $20 + $2/gallon) and drive it back (maybe 20 minutes). And unfortunately they had kept the piece of paper with my reservation number on it... and their phone number... so I called the main UHaul office (this is one instance where it was very handy to have Sandy on the cell phone: I had her look up both those bits of info on the laptop) and got the number for the local UHaul, then called them and explained the situation -- and they said as long as I could get it back by 7pm, there would be no problem.

I finished up around 7:15 -- and the sooper-dooper lock I had bought from Home Depot for just this occasion wouldn't fit. It would go all the way through the hole, but the hole was recessed and the other end of the U-bolt couldn't make it back out. So I had to leave the door unsecured. Fortunately the storage place is behind a fence, with a keypad security thingy, so the number of people who can even get in is pretty small, and it seemed unlikely that any one of them would be interested in stealing my junk -- even if they happened to choose my unit to open up and inspect -- in the time it would take me to get out to Lowe's and buy a smaller lock.

''(Dinner details omitted)''

Next morning... Livia was firmly of the opinion that I should pursue the issue of the car/piano/merch with the magistrate immediately, rather than calling after I got back to NC. Sandy concurred.

And this was where the puzzle pieces started to fall together, albeit slowly. I called the magistrate's office to see what to do (and to make sure they were open that day, the day before Thanksgiving), and they reiterated what the Sheriff had told me a few weeks ago: The police file a report. You take the report to the magistrate's office. So I went to the police station.

The police had not filed a report.

After a bit of inquiry, I was able to establish that in fact they *should* have filed one, and another officer started composing one (apparently *something* had been filed) which he said would take at least 15 minutes.

While waiting, Sandy called to say that the power had gone out. I talked her through starting up the generator, but we were unable to get the (gas) heat blower to come on. Lovely.

Fortunately, the report showed up more or less on schedule; they were actually very helpful, I felt. So I drove on down to the courthouse.

At the courthouse I almost locked myself out of the car, but in an unexpected display of good design it wouldn't let me lock the door from outside while the key was in the ignition. (Woo-hoo.) I did actually remember to divest of unnecessary implements before going in, though, which helped me feel less nervous.

The magistrate's office was these three secretary-types behind a service desk -- one each for criminal, civil, and bad checks. The "criminal" one was apparently handling customers that day, so I talked to her.

She took the police report, made copies (for them -- I got to keep the original, a nice bonus), and did a bit of investigating. Apparently the dollar value is high enough that someone might decide that a detective should be assigned to the case, in which case I gather I'd be talking to the detective to find out what happens next. I can call on Monday to find out about that, if I don't hear from them.

In the absence of a detective being assigned, I fill out the form (of which she gave me a copy) to charge L&B with Theft By Retaining, mail it in with a check for $20, and then call to find out when to call to find out when the court date is. (Or maybe they'll call me; I forget.)
===Status===
So now I have until December 5 to do something about the rest of the stuff in storage. My current plan is to see if my court date is anytime next week; if it is, then do the court date and move the rest of the stuff on the same day, time permitting. Otherwise call Neff again (probably Monday) and see if I can arrange for an extension... or maybe just drive down anyway, especially if we can get the respite care this time.

The police report "original narrative" page reads as follows:

{| style="background: #eeeeee;"
|-
|On 11/26/03 @ approx 0930 hrs. victim came to ACCPD to obtain a report regarding his personal property being held by suspects w/o authority for a debt suspects claim the victim owes.

Victim advised he operated his personal business out of suspect's residence and had left some of the property at 1242 Hull Rd. while arranging victim's relocation to NC. Victim advised when he returned to collect his property, the suspects refused to allow victim to collect them. Suspects claim victim owes them an undisclosed amount of money and won't release property until the debt is paid. Victim advised the suspects have the keys to his Mercedes and won't return them nor allow access into the house to get his piano or business merchandise.

An ACCPD office (H. Duranso) responded to the address on 11/25/03 regarding this incident and met with both parties but no report was filed.

Victim advised he will pursue matter w/Magistrate Court for resolution.
Nick & Company,

Thanks for letting us know you are okay... I was a bit worried. Bad
weather has other hazards besides the loss of electricity... including icy
roads... which do not always deter those who are unable to navigate
them... so noone is really safe on the roads. So, I'm glad you're okay
and sorry you've had such a hard time with the motel and the cold, etc. I
thought it might have made more sense to stay until you were sure the
power was back on but your plan made sense, too, in other ways.

I've been doing a bit of reflecting, today, as I worried about you....
It's so clear that there are issues between us that are really huge for
each of us. I think it's about a fuck up in communication and
understanding that's happened and a lack of coinciding time and
opportunity to follow the thought trails through completion that is
inhibiting the possibility of resolution, here... But it is painful to see
the distance between us when it has been so different in the past. So,
together, face to face, the distance was still so obvious but the feelings
of connection are very big for me, as well.

I want you to know that it is my hope to be able to work this through....
salvage the friendship....and work together in a capacity that works for
all involved. I don't think that giving up is the answer... Just worrying
about anything happening to you on your way home...drug up the love and
good times we've had (for me). The problems were clearly secondary.

Rest well and be warm, dry and safe. Please keep us posted....

Lynne :-)

Part One is set on 9/11/01, though the time scale kind of moves forward rapidly (hours, possibly days) as the questions and answers progress. Part Two is set on 9/11/07 (did the recording on 9/9/07). If I'd been organized, I would have had a bunch of places to post this so people could be actually listening to it on that date, but oh well. Part Two is perhaps a bit harsher on [[issuepedia:George W. Bush|Dubya]], but hey &ndash; he has really earned it, and I don't mind letting him have a little of my spleen to go along with the civil rights.

<noinclude>==Notes==</noinclude>
===Explanation===
This is a "break-in" record <noinclude>(&agrave; la [[wikipedia:Mr. Jaws|Mr. Jaws]]) </noinclude>where all the "responses" are from They Might Be Giants songs. I tried to strike a good balance between humor and making serious points about the [[issuepedia:9/11 anomalies|issues surrounding 9/11]], with the serious points taking a slight backseat... but I think I managed to get some good ones in nonetheless. (What do you think?)
===Disclaimer===
I am not in any way associated with They Might Be Giants. To the best of my knowledge neither of the Johns nor anyone associated with them have either heard this recording or expressed any views about the 9/11 situation. If someone could recommend a good place to post this for feedback from the TMBG crew, I'd be interested. (TMBWiki?)

[[Staddon vs. Griever]]: [[SvsG:Messages for Defendants|Messages for Defendants]]

In the past I have attempted to convey bits of information to the Defendants by "going through channels" (e.g. suggesting to my lawyer that she convey them to the defending attorney to convey to them), but that doesn't seem to work very well.

Maintaing a list of such things here opens up two other possible avenues of communication:
* I can bring them up in mediation, if it seems appropriate
* The Defendants (or their attorney) might read this page (or possibly it will be brought to their attention by a third party)
==Trivia==
I still have several items which somehow ended up in my possession; please remember to ask for these before the mediation adjourns:
* Lynne's 45 RPM recording
* A couple of Bubba's CDs
* An expired Georgia driver's license of Lynne's

I brought them with me to the previous mediation session and showed them to the mediator, but they got overlooked in the rush at the end of the session.
==Legal Matters==
(I may or may not bring up these items at the next session, depending on the situation.)

We ended the last session with an agreement that I would produce an accounting (henceforth "sales accounting") showing what RDA would be owed were they to be credited for a share of sales through The Red House Store / vbz.net (henceforth "The Store") under the system described by Lynne; in return for this, Lynne will produce an inventory of all vbz merchandise (i.e. merchandise paid for by any of the Defendants with the intention of selling it in The Store) remaining in their possession.

* '''To all parties, regarding accountings''':
*# It was stated that Defendants had not yet seen a sales accounting. It is not true, however, that I had not produced one; I had done so, and it was included in the list of [[SvsG: Documents Available for Inspection Online| Documents Available for Inspection Online]] (see "Detailed Accounting of Sales") as early as September 21, 2005. It remains at [ http://www.hypertwins.org/files/rh_sales/ ].
*# Now that Lynne has clarified what information she wanted (i.e. an accounting showing receipts and expenses from which to calculate the RDA's share according to the schedule she described), I have produced a slightly different accounting. It is 64 pages long as of this writing and I haven't yet figured out how to format it for the web, but I will be bringing a printout of it to the next mediation session.
*# This new accounting shows that for the time period beginning with the first known sale at The Store and ending [[2003-06-27 SvsG Emails|June 27, 2003]] (the date when I notified Bubba that I was ending our business relationship), the net balance of sales showed a loss of $6465.58*; RDA's share of this would then be a further debt of $5172.46. (*'''Note''': initial estimates were closer to $9000; this figure may be revised further as more old paperwork is found and entered into the system.)
*# As I have said before, I do not believe there was an agreement in effect between myself and the Defendants by the time RDA's merchandise began selling through The Store (for reasons stated [[SvsG:Plaintiffs' Responses to Facts|elsewhere]]), and I do not at this time intend to hold RDA liable for this additional $5k of debt.
*# However, in the event that the merchandise remaining is substantially less than my best estimates of what I left in Athens, I will be putting in an additional claim for the estimated value of any missing merchandise. (I am of course willing to consider evidence that my estimates should be revised.) The existing [[SvsG:Accounting Summary|accounting]] concerns non-business loans and repayments only.
* '''To the Defendants, regarding their strategy''': You appear to be taking up a position which more or less diametrically opposes my own (you state that you are the injured party, and I should pay you damages etc.), but (so far) without any substantiating arguments, much less evidence. I would respectfully suggest that this strategy will be counterproductive for you, for the following reasons:
*# The longer this case takes, the more legal and travel expenses I will incur, and I am assessing all such expenses to your account. (The no-show for the very first court date, for example, cost you $247.50 at the IRS mileage rates then in effect.)
*# The longer this case takes, the more evidence I find to substantiate my case, and the more I am able to organize it and prepare for a possible court presentation. Conversely, as far as I can tell, you have no substantial evidence to present in defense of your side, otherwise you would have presented it by now.
*# The longer this case takes, the more interest will accumulate on your account (the interest for 2005 alone was over $2000).
*# I think the reason you are taking up this (completely unreasonable and indefensible) position is so that the mediator will suggest a "middle ground" which will be effectively in your favor. This is [[Issuepedia:Moving the Fulcrum|Moving the Fulcrum]] in the hope that the [[Issuepedia:Fallacy of Moderation|Fallacy of Moderation]] will prevail; this tactic can only work against an unprepared opponent or if the negotiator is easily misled (neither of which I believe to be true) or in an attempt to stall for time, which I believe (for the reasons given above) will ultimately be detrimental to you.

==Mediation==
Finally, unless today's negotiations reach a satisfactory conclusion, I propose that the assumption of confidentiality be removed. If there are any particular items which either party wishes kept confidential (and I have seen no evidence that any exist), the affected party may state so explicitly and particularly. If we are going to be spending further hours discovering what (if any) common ground exists between myself and the Defendants in this matter, any progress towards that end should be documented and available for use in court so that the process will not have to be repeated.

In the event that the Defendants do not agree with this request, I see no advantage to continuing these negotiations. The current shroud of secrecy serves only to further delay the progress of this case with no benefit towards establishing the facts of the matter or reaching a fair settlement.

Yes I would be glad to assist you. I am sorry that I have not responded before now. I mistakenly overlooked your e-mail. I thought it was an advertisement. Tomorrow I will be back in the office. Please call me anytime between 9:00 and 5:00. As far as I know, our computer did not crash. I can also assure you that our process to serve you has become much easier. I look forward to hearing from you tomorrow.
Hi again Robin,

Spam is quite the problem these days; we definitely understand about overlooked emails.

I'm wondering if there's any way we could do this by email instead of phone -- when it comes to making important phone calls, we both tend to be very averse (which is why we had a friend of ours make the initial call to you about the email) and will put it off until there's time to do it with a clear head, which never seems to happen these days. :-S

The supposed computer crash was shortly before you came on board, right around the time that The Durham Center moved from the offices near the corner of Lakewood Ave. and Roxboro St. Emails to Alexsandra Manuel, Josh's caseworker, began bouncing -- which seemed to confirm the computer crash rumor -- but it's entirely possible that it was just a rumor.

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Thank you!
==Josh lunch preparation==
* defrost entire pack of Shelton's Turkey Franks
** put in ziplock bag marked "please warm up" (so they know to microwave it)
* sandwich bag of veggie chips
* 3 Sprites -- put his initials on the caps of the Sprites -- put in gallon ziplock bag with his name and date
* Fill his water bottle (but do not refrigerate; he won't drink it cold)
Put all this in his backpack.

Mondays and Wednesdays he has swimming, so put his swim shorts inside his towel (rolled-up) and put them in his backpack too (on those days).
: 2 gummies from yellow-cap bottle, 1 gummy from green-cap bottle
: Back to living room for dressing:
:* socks (had written down "one by one", but he seemed fine with getting them both at once)
:* pants (he already has changed underwear)
:* shirt -- do the "how big is Joshy?" thing to cue him, and he might need help getting the shirt off
: Back to kitchen for finishing up:
:* brush his hair (small hairbrush in bathroom cabinet)
:* "go and get your shoes" cues him to put away dirty clothes
:* He will get both shoes and put one on, but waits for it to be tied before putting on second one.
:* Check temperature (to decide if jacket is needed)
:* Cue for jacket -- he knows where "grey jacket" is

The American Coalition of Bullies and Coercive Bureaucrats (ACBCB) today issued a statement saying that refusing to pay their extortionary demands was, in effect, worse than raping and murdering children and killing bunny-rabbits with a machine gun.

"It's simply inexcusable," a spokesperson for the organization said, "when you think of what these people are doing. Bullies and Coercive Bureaucrats provide an essential function in our society, and are just trying to do their (mostly) legally-appointed jobs; they have wives and kids to support, usually in that order, and it's completely unwarranted and unjustified to deny them the income for which they work so hard threatening and abusing people."

The spokesperson went on to say that the ACBCB is sponsoring legislation to enforce the payment of extortion money, legalize bribery, and mandate universal protection money requirements as part of business insurance. "We just want to see some standards in effect; business has been too corrupt and too chaotic for too long. If bribery is a crime, only criminals will offer bribes; are these the people you want to see in charge of the legislative process?"

He further added that any opposition to the proposed legislation is manufactured by groups with nefarious motives: "People who supposedly believe this is wrong are just enemies of the system, conspiring together to tear it to pieces so they can feast on the scraps. They want to destroy our work and our livelihood and see every single bully and coercive bureaucrat forced to beg for scraps of food in the streets. It's sheer vindictiveness, the degree of destructive thought-patterns exhibited by these so-called "freedom-loving", "peaceful" individuals. They might as well be taking up axes and hacking away at our dogs and destroying our homes -- and they undoubtedly will if we can't enact rules to stop them. It really is completely senseless and brutal."

It may be that I'm doing something wrong... It's Lynne... but it looks like you're online but I can't reach you ICQ. I wanted to talk to you about SunTrust. I ran out of gas with the check book on me the night before last and Bubba had to put gas in the truck and diesel in the can to come and rescue me in the truck...on the card. I had to write a check out of the RDA account for the rent when the money isn't there yet so I'm doing a bit of juggling, there. There were a couple of small and urgent things that had to be done yesterday and I told Bubba to put them on the card and I'd put money in the SunTrust account before 2:00 today, which I am planning on doing. This should not complicate the issues involved in the figuring since I will be putting in the exact amount that has been put on the card in the last 48 hours... I plan to spend quite a bit of time on figuring out that account this weekend.

Major portions of last weekend were spent in getting everything out of Red House prior to 9/9. I worked until 2AM the morning of 9/9 to finally get finished. I did much more than get the stuff out that I didn't want to lose. I thought it looked really good, actually. We still have much to do on the outside and with vehicles, but I plan on doing my part of that work during this next week, after I've had time to drudge through the paper piles.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know what was going on with the account and to let you know that I know about those charges and that the balance would go negative if I didn't put money in... so I am...

Please let me know that you got this...
==Benjamin==
'''Food''': Benjamin is pretty much self-sufficient for food. He is also very resourceful these days about finding leftovers in the fridge or arranging things so he can reach stuff that is out of reach for some grownups ;-) He certainly enjoys having specific foods prepared for him, though, so this can be a treat for good behavior.

Posted on the kitchen wall just outside the office is a list of foods that [[Benjamin]] likes; he used to go to it for inspiration a lot, but lately has settled into eating hot-pockets, frozen foods, and leftovers (as well as occasional healthy foods like bananas) as long as they are available. Some of the items on the list will need grownup preparation, and feel free to call to ask where ingredients or cooking apparati can be found, if you can't find something. We will make sure to stock up on his current favorite, frozen Lasagna, which he has been preparing for himself for many months now, as well as hot pockets.

<!-- '''Cleaning up''': You don't have to do anything with the "points system" if you don't want to (especially away from home, where the tracking sheets aren't handy and the setup is generally rather different), but we usually reward the kids with points for taking care of their places at table (one point for each: tray, lid, utensil, plate). I also occasionally charge them points for cleaning up after them when we need to use the table; we should do this more regularly so that they will get the idea, but we don't have time/energy.
-->
'''Sleep issues''': Every now and then, Benjamin will have night-terrors; the most attention he ever needs when this happens, these days, is some soothing words, maybe an elbow to hold (he has a thing for elbows), or maybe someone to lie down with him for a few minutes. He went through a particularly bad phase of this a month or two ago, but hasn't had any since then (nothing that woke us up, anyway). Lately these episodes have been shorter and shorter, and you don't actually have to get up and check on him; just wait and see if he quiets down within 30-60 seconds.

Sometimes he will need a foot-rub or a leg-rub; he knows what growing pains are and will tell you if he has them, and then the foot/leg rub is our usual solution. There's also a homeopathic we usually give them which seems to help: "Calc Phos"

[[Category:Dated Items]]
==Notes==
I sent the following to {{yp|Time Warner Cable}} after paying my cable internet bill (2 months, apparently late); the message explains the circumstances.

==Message==
Some issues with the billing.

1. Email notification of bills due tends to be iffy. I apparently didn't receive an email notification of my bill last month or this month, and was only alerted to the problem when your automated phone system called to tell me that I needed to call you for some unspecified reason.

IMPORTANT NOTE: As a policy, I do not call anyone back unless they tell me why they are calling. "Important information about your account" is not sufficient.

Fortunately, it occurred to me that I hadn't seen a bill from you guys in some time, so I checked the payment system (here) and found that 2 months' worth were due (which I have now paid).

Instead of having a robot call me to tell me that there was a message for me but that it couldn't tell me what the message was, it would have been a lot better if you could have sent an EMAIL (and then followed up with a printed letter if there was no response in 48 hours).

Also, why didn't you send out an email as soon as the bill was late? Followed by a printed letter if there was no response?

2. The new PayXPress is an UNimprovement over the old one. WIth the old one, I could see individual bills, keep track of which ones had been paid, etc. With this one, I can't even figure out when the next bill is due.

I wanted to set myself a monthly alarm on my computer to remind me to pay the bill, since I apparently can't count on you guys to tell me, but I can't even figure out when I should set it for. I'll have to guess that the next one is due in about 3 weeks. If you could tell me more exactly, that would be helpful.

Also, the old system kept my credit card information on record, so I didn't have to enter it each time; this has apparently been discontinued. This makes the payment process take about twice as long.

Thank you for your attention to these matters.
==Automated Response==
Thank you for sending us your inquiry, Nick. We have received your inquiry, and will be responding within 4 days. Your tracking number for this inquiry will be 65687. Please keep this email for your records and refer to the above tracking number when contacting us. Thank you, Time Warner Cable.
==Human Response 2005-12-10==
We are aware of some customers not receiving the monthly email notifications and have not been able to locate a central reason for this. We are forwarding your information to our corporate offices for analysis. Thank you for your patience while we investigate this. Your bill is due on the 26th of each month. If you have any other questions please reply to this email or call 1-866-489-2669 for assistance.

Dash McWayne: HTYP moved to HTYP ENJOYING BRIAN PEPPERS DAY???

[[category:woozle projects]][[Image:VYPLGO2.64pxh.png|left]]''[[HTYP]] is an online "directory of everything" and "technical manual for the universe" created by [[Woozle]] in 2005. It is on the web at [http://htyp.org htyp.org].''

HTYP originally stood for "'''H'''yper'''T'''win '''Y'''ellow '''P'''ages", referring to its origin as part of the HypertWiki. (Several other "bacronym" interpretations are given on HTYP's "[[htyp:htyp:about|About]]" page.)

HTYP is free to use, requires no registration, and carries no advertising.
==Purpose==
I tend to do a lot of projects without really having a clearly verbalized understanding of why I think they're important, and that would seem to be the case for HTYP. The following is, therefore, not so much "the complete reason why I created HTYP" as it is a sort of attempt to work it out.

HTYP is a sort of combination village square bulletin board (the kind where you post notices and business cards), do-it-yourself ''[[wikipedia:Consumer Reports|Consumer Reports]]'', user-written technical manual (every time I figure something out in [[htyp:Linux|Linux]], I make notes in HTYP), and general practical how-to reference.

I wanted to create a place where people didn't need to worry so much about whether content was "appropriate" or "relevant". I wanted to be able to make notes on any topic without having to organize it into a presentable article first. I wanted to be able to collect and organize links on various topics. I wanted "yellow pages" which wasn't full of automatically-generated chaff and advertisements, and which anyone could update or correct.

You can perhaps get some idea of HTYP's purpose in life by reading [[htyp:HTYP:unlike Wikipedia|how it is different from Wikipedia]].

More on this topic as I work it out...
==Revenue==
I have often considered putting up some text ads, but I've decided long-term credibility is more important than trying to squeeze some short-term cash out of the site. If people will use the site, I (along with everyone else) can derive far more indirect benefit from it than the direct benefit I might get from advertising income.

Another revenue-generating possibility is to print merchandise (t-shirts, coffee mugs, etc.) bearing HTYP's logo. I may do this at some point, when I have time.

Finally, there is the obvious option of simply accepting donations. I'm not sure if it makes sense to ask for donations when HTYP is not a non-profit (nobody can get a tax exemption), and I suspect that becoming a nonprofit might hinder HTYP's ability to speak freely. Further investigation is needed. Perhaps some people would be willing to donate without the tax incentive, for that matter.
